This is the way spa cabinets are typically made, slats of real wood. The natural wood of course deteriorates over time, bugs love to eat it, and it loses its color almost immediately upon use. That's because the chemical rich water you bring out of the spa with you when you exit, goes right through the factory stain. This leaves a dark "V" shaped area where you get in and out requiring re-treatment frequently. The area between the slats allows wind and water to penetrate into the interior of the spa, breaking down insulation and causing parts to corrode.
